Hi Lance
Out of interest, if you didn't have the, let's say "extra motivation", of Martie helping you keep on track would you still be there?

I agree with everything you've said but I think sometimes you really need the help of somebody who really cares about your success to keep you focused when the going gets a bit tough.

I have had to make some choices lately and I have found that targeting good alternatives is my best plan of attack. I needed to give up sugar so I switched to diet soda and several rice dishes.

I didn't take off any weight drinking diet soda and I had a problem with gout.

I switched to ice tea, ice coffee and water. I lost a lot of weight, and my gout went away and I am still staying away from sugar.

It breaks down to making choices and changing your habits. You need to make corrections to hit your target goal.

Great advice. Step by step, day by day, little by little, call it what you like, it works.

Lance . .. you totally rock! What a blessing having a supportive wife is (hugs to Martie!)

I think you missed an important point here . . . you listened to your most valuable partner (Martie) and followed through with her support. Would you even have started doing this without her planning and encouragement to start?

I talk about making good decisions with my teenagers ALL THE TIME. You reminded me I have to be talking to myself about those minute by minute decisions, too.

Thanks for making the complex simple

Hi Lance,

First, I've got to tell you that I love the way you wrote the story, like you were speaking it. It really hooked me, it even had your expressions. (I didn't get to hear the video because I just moved all my stuff to the other corner of the room, I'm a makeover nut! :) So I just read the written post, and what I really want to contribute in this discussion is my 2-cent about what you raised in the latter part of the post -- that of focusing on achieving your goal and doing little steps to achieve it. Even if we have little success at first, we got to keep digging until we hit gold, rather than jumping from one unfinished thing to another and leaving a trail of half-dug holes in our path.

Enjoy the weekend and the veggies!

Hi Lance

I think you raise a really important point here for two reasons, number one is that every journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, the second and vital bit is for people to understand that they must keep working through to completion

In this time of wild claims and push button solutions people have somehow lost track of the need to work and maintain discipline, without it you are going to fail

Thanks for sharing

Hi Lance,

Very Nice! What you are describing here is something we all do in everyday life but never really seeing it. To get through your day you go second by second, minute by minute & hour by hour. If you really wanted to you could manage every second but who ever does that?

Wow! I think I am going to pay attention more to all the little things I do in a day and why I am doing them to begin with. Thanks for the new perspective. :)

Lance,
I love it. You are so true that you need to focus on little successes. But you also had something else - GREAT SUPPORT. Your wife was there pointing the way, your friends and family where there to listen and support. Those are priceless when making changes.

When new year's eve was headed our way I was thinking the same thing. Too often we (myself included) make this HUGE "pie in the sky" dreams into goals and resolutions. Instead have a vision of where you want to head, but focus on little steps. Just like your 10 day fast.
http://cubedwellerfitness.com/2011/12/do-not-set-new-years-resolutions/

Then I thought about my own eating habits. I honestly hadn't realized that it has been over six months since I made a change. With small steps change can become easy. Before you know it six months have past. Check out how I quit eating my favorite meal of the day ... and kept it up for 6 months.

Great post Lance.
So will you continue on the fast? What's your next step?

I do believe that you should have an overall vision, "the big Goal" sort of speak...

But I really appreciate that you zone in on the importance of taking the "little" steps toward the overall vision.

Otherwise it is just another DAY DREAM, and believe me, I have spent many a years day dreaming...

Lance, you hit the nail on the head it starts and is every decision we make, every step of the way.

Thanks so much, you have revolutionized my thinking with this and "get rid of the to do list."

I actually get things DONE, feel better about myself, my kiddos are happier too ;) and my husband has more confidence in what I am doing as I am able to express the steps I am taking.

This is much easier than trying to explain the big goal because naturally my husband would ask, "How do you plan to achieve it?"

Back to the small steps, Lance!

To your healthy success! Thanks for the post.
